Vela, should he be starting every match?

February 19, 2009

This question has been asked many times, should Carlos Vela be in the starting line up. Well yes he should.

Since playing officially for Arsenal Carlos Vela has had made twenty appearances nine in the premier league five in the cup (FA Cup and Carling cup) and six in Europe. Altogether he has made twenty appearances and has scored four goals, all of these in the cup, three of these against Sheffield United.

Vela has a very powerful left foot and also a footballers mind. He is never scared to run at defenders and more importantly isn’t scared of taking shots anywhere. He has a good pace and is strong against people which is important on the wing. Vela can cross the ball very well.

Against Cardiff on Monday Vela played on the left wing and shone. He set up Eduardo’s first goal on the night by making a clever chip cross into the box. Also he made some very clever runs on the break. One of these was when Eduardo made a cross ball over to Vela who ran at the defence and shot. The shot was so hard that the goalie wasn’t able to hold onto it.

Over other games Wenger has tried playing him upfront but hasn’t shone. He is classified as a striker but when he plays upfront he moves to the left wing. This seems to be where he fills comfortable to play.

Overall he should be starting on the wing for these reasons.

Arsenal vs Cardiff, the post match review

Arsenal are at home tonight against Cardiff City. From last nights 6th round draw it is clear, Arsenal have a chance of getting to the semi-finals of the FA Cup. After Cardiff we could play Burnley at home and then either Sheffield United or Hull City at home again.

This home draws could work in our favour as going to the smaller clubs to play is quite difficult as we found out when we played Burnley in the Carling Cup.

Arsenal tonight are without Adebayor due to a hamstring injury and also Eboue with a silly red car against Tottenham, which isn’t that much of a miss.

There is a good sign that Eduardo will be back tonight and playing, but I don’t think that he will be starting so I think Wenger will use Bendtner. Bendtner has came out with a comment that he should be starting every match and tonight with all our injuries could be his time to impress Wenger.

With all our injuries it could mean that Vela, who hasn’t had much first team experience, could be staring on the left. Clichy who may be on the bench means it is another game for the young Kieran Gibbs.

Despite us having all these injuries and suspensions we should get through tonight.
